Traxxas Slash Race Tips: Simple Changes for Improved Performance
Traxxas introduced the radio-controlled 1/10th scale Slash in 2008. It wasn’t long before the vehicle became extremely popular with both experienced racers and novices. The low price point, combined with its durability has attracted many to the sport. At most R/C off-road race tracks, the stock Traxxas Slash is now the most popular racing class.
When racing in the Traxxas Slash stock class, only limited changes are allowed to the short-course truck. Outside of an upgraded transmitter, changes to the electronics are typically not permitted. However, there are still a few easy-to-implement changes that will noticeably improve the performance of the Slash. Best of all, no cost is involved.
Give these racings tips for the Traxxas Slash 2WD a try:
Increase traction by reversing the tire direction. Don’t remove the tires from your hubs; just switch the left and right wheels. The tires actually grip dirt better when pointed backwards.
Swap the front and rear wheels for better steering. The rear tires supplied with the Slash are wider than those installed up front. Moving the rear wheels to the front produces a vehicle that better grabs the track surface and slides less when cornering. The front and rear wheel hex adapters are different widths; Keep these in place, only move the wheels. With this simple change, you’ll have tighter steering and will be able to take more speed into the corners.
Slide the battery pack forward for improved vehicle balance. This recommendation assumes that you are running a 6-cell battery pack. By default, the included foam spacer is positioned at the front of the battery compartment. Simply slide the spacer to the back of the compartment.
These changes, while simple, will vastly improve the handling of your Slash. Initially, the vehicle may feel slightly awkward. Allow yourself a few test runs to become accustomed to the changes in handling. It won’t be long before you appreciate these changes and notice and improvement in your racing ability.
