An audiologist is a professional specially trained to render service to patients with hearing defects or hearing loss which may be due to natural aging, injury or illness. These professionals with high educational backgrounds either are a doctor in audiology or a doctor of philosophy or had finished his or her education in a reputable educational institution. Usually, an audiologist has a clinic with audiologist staffing therein specially trained to give evaluation as well as treatment to all kinds of problems involving hearing loss or defects.

In some states, a doctoral degree in the field of audiology from a reputable institution is mandatory before one can practice the profession. To get this degree, one has to spend eight years of university study plus a clinical experience under the supervision of a professional audiologist. In addition to this, a license to practice is required and a continuing education is needed. Most states do require audiologists to have a license only for the purpose of distributing hearing aids. But in other states, a license is only required for the purpose of reimbursing the hearing aids disposed. In addition, the states are giving trainings for the practice of the profession and also for complying with the regulations of the state on the practice of such profession.
